I loved the sound of this book, and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed at the beginning. It started out pretty slowly with a lot of telling instead of showing. But about a quarter of the way in, the paced picked up and the writing quality improved. I loved the use of Vietnamese, especially how the mom used it when she didn't want guests to understand. ;) I loved the inclusivity, and while I can't say anything about the quality of the bi and trans rep, I am thrilled to see it. Can't wait to read the sequel!
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Jess was a very likeable heroine and her building relationship with Abby was adorable to read about. All of the characters seemed well-rounded to me, and even though it was a little predictable at times, that was easily forgiven. Entertaining, fast-paced and full of diverse superheroes - what more can you want?
Somehow this really wasn't what I expected.Or maybe it was. I didn't read the blurb before I started reading, so all I knew was there would be an bisexual Asian-American protagonist, a f/f romance and superheroes.And it was great!The characters were interesting and had personality, the romance was lovely and sweet, the plot exciting and the world-building cool and well done.It plays in the future, sometimes in the 2100s I believe, after a third world war and a solar flare, and some dystopian shifting of governments and countries. The availability of resources shifted, and now meta-humans with special abilities exist, some of which become heroes or villains.Jess, the protagonist, born into a family of superheroes but without abilities herself, was relateable, but there were a few instances that confused me. Things were said or stuff happened that was not okay in my opinion, and Jess just.... didn't react? Which I found very weird.Equally confusing was the level of involvement of the teenage main characters in different things.I liked the plot overall, but I found that the different subplots were a bit clashing in severity.What I did not expect was how this book made me feel. Objectively, everything about it is good, but it didn't make me feel good. The entire second half of the book I felt distraught and the discoveries disturbed me, but the overall mood of the book and the character's reactions didn't reflect that at all? Which only made the feeling worsen.I know this review is all over the place but, yeah, this was a very unsettling reading experience for me and I'm still confused about it.In conclusion:The book is good, but my reactions to it were very unexpected which rattled me.
